New NY Pistol Licenses from 2002 to 2011, Explain This Brady Bunch

As in a previous post, I noted the the Brady bunch is going around saying that their are no new gun owners, only old gun owners buying more guns.  In NY state you are not allowed to even touch a handgun without a license so you can tell how many new handgun owners their are, (legal that is-not the illegal ones,) in NY state.   You cannot say that the people who get their license do not own rifles or shotguns but you can say that these people never legally owned a handgun so they are all new handgun owners.  NY is renowned for the difficulty in getting a handgun license and the hoops that you have to jump through and the additional cost so if the number of new handgun owners has gone up so much in the last few years in NY, you have to wonder what the numbers are in states that don’t try to punish people who want to own a handgun.  Some of the counties that I have checked have big backlogs and it can take from 4 to 6 months or more to get your new license in your county in NY.
NOTE: These numbers do not include NY City.

Numbers provided by the New York State Police Pistol Permit Unit with permission from the PI department.  Part of the spike in 2002 and 2003 was caused by retirements from NY City  Police officers following 9/11.
