Various gun manufacturers make
guns for training and kids and smaller adults. Rifles like the Davey
Crickett and Chipmunk Rifle are of a type and design that are consider
by many to be the safest and best for training around because:
-
They are both single-shot bolt-action so that once the gun is fired or
unloaded, you know that no rounds remain in the chamber.
-
They both must be manually cocked so that after chambering a fresh cartridge
and locking the bolt down, the instructor or shooter must manually cock
the rifle to fire. (This allows the child being trained to load the rifle
and only after aiming down range and in the proper position the instructor
can reach down and cock the rifle. When the child has shown the ability
to safely handle the rifle they can cock the rifle themselves.)
-
They are both 22 caliber, the smallest rimfire round available. The
22 cal. is the quietest, cheapest and has the lightest recoil and is the
most popular caliber of all guns produced with billions or rounds fired
every year. The 22 cal. is also the only caliber used in the Olympic
Games, (but the guns and Olympic quality bullets do cost a lot more.)
