As far as Sen. Ashcroft's testimony is concerned, from what I was able the hear it was very disappointing.  He caved in all the places that we would expect him to stand up and said that registration, AWB and other point were OK.  Senators on the pro-gun side did not even question the head of HCI.  Just remember that all elected officials are going to be gun shy because of the election of anit-gun members and the defeat of the pro-gun candidates that includes Sen. UpChuck Schumer and Sen. H. R. C******

ALSO SUPPORT GALE NORTON, SECRETARY OF THE INTERIOR
Please contact your U.S. Senators today and urge them to support President-elect George W. Bush's
nomination for Secretary of the Interior—Gale Norton. Throughout her career, which includes two
terms as Colorado's Attorney General, Norton has supported the interests of hunters and law-abiding
firearm owners, and now is the time to come to her aid. She is under heavy fire by "radical environmentalist"
groups, as well as other groups that are not known for being involved with environmental issues, such as the
 NAACP and the AFL-CIO.

HAPPY NEW YEAR

I am still adding some things to my new computer and trying to decide what to do with the problems of not enough space on my web page and remaking the whole web page and breaking it down.  Some other  things that are happening that will also take up some of my time that I will let you know about when they happen.  As you would think, with first Sen. UpChuck Schumer and now Sen. H. R. C******, gun owners are doing a very bad job at defending their rights in NY state.  We must do more.

Pres. C****** slinks out of the White House.

Rudy Vallet's "My View" reply to the antihunting article in the T H-R
I am writing this in response to a “My View” entitled “It’s Time to Abolish Sport Hunting” by Anne Muller (Nov.13), and also to defend hunting and fishing as legitimate outdoor sports. In her article Ms Muller says, among other things, that “98% of the population oppose the killing of animals for recreation”. If that is her definition of hunting, it is a simplistic and biased one, to be sure, and is designed to elicit a desired response from people being surveyed. I would, however, like to know where her 98% figure comes from!
Here are some figures that are real and unbiased: 1) Almost 4% of the population of New York State purchases a hunting license- right away there goes the 98% statement! - and this is in a state with large urban areas.  I’m sure that the percentage is higher in more rural states. 2) A survey conducted by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (1996) found that 85% of the people in the United States support hunting as long as the hunter makes use of the meat, and I don’t know of any hunter who would kill a deer, or a duck, or a pheasant, or a rabbit, etc. and just leave it in the field to decay. On of the main reasons why we hunt is to enjoy the bounty of our days afield. Wild game is nourishing and delicious and is free of hormones and antibiotics.
Ms Muller also states that the “problem” (the quotation marks are hers - intended, no doubt, to indicate that no problem exists) of overpopulation of certain species of wildlife in certain areas is a fiction, and that complaints “are usually from unnamed persons”. I would like some data on that! Why would people reporting a deer/car accident or a bear in their backyard strive to remain anonymous? Also, Ms Muller puts the word “complaint” in quotations, as if trying to say that they are also a fiction.
Sport hunting is statistically among the safest of all sports, with an accident rate lower than for bicycle riding and swimming (in fact, you are 3 times more likely to have a fatal accident while swimming than while hunting). Hunting is also a traditional outdoor activity and is perfectly legal. Farmers and country people understand this. They understand the cycles of life and death in nature, and they have a greater appreciation of plants and animals and how they come to provide food for each other and for human beings. Meat and poultry do not just appear - neatly wrapped - in the display cases of supermarkets. The animals taken by hunters have at least lived a more natural life in the wild, and are harvested for use by the hunters who find them in their natural habitat.
I have found that most anti-hunters - unlike the farmers and country people - have an unrealistic view of life in the wild. They often tend to think that wild animals have human traits and feelings and emotions (this is properly called anthropomorphism), but deer and other animals do not think and respond and feel as humans do. Instead, their lives are controlled almost completely by genetically endowed “instincts” and behaviors. Their lives in the wild are also usually short and brutish, by human standards. They do not just frolic about with their cuddly animal friends in a warm, sunny Eden - thinking human thoughts and expressing them in a human manner.
To Ms Muller, and to others who share her sentiments, I also wish to say that real hunters and fishermen (What about killing fish? They’re animals too. In fact they’re in the same taxonomic phylum as deer and game birds!  I’m sure that anti-fishing is next) are not evil, uncaring, sadistic people. We are your friends and neighbors, and we appreciate - and usually know a great deal about - wildlife and the outdoors. We enjoy being a part of nature. We make every effort to purge lawbreakers and unethical “outlaws” from our ranks. We were the first Conservationists. John James Audubon and Aldo Leopold - two icons of the environmental movement in this country - were both hunters. Hunters and fishermen - through license fees and added taxes on their equipment - pay for wildlife preservation and for acquiring habitat, and the lands purchased through their fees can be enjoyed by all who love the outdoors.
We are intent to continue enjoying the pursuit of fish and game, and to pass on the traditions of sport hunting and fishing to the next generation. The Pine Bush H.S. program is an enormous success, and other schools in the region are interested in starting similar programs. There is nothing wrong with teaching outdoor sports such as fly-tying and fly fishing, outdoor survival, bow hunting, and, yes, the proper and safe use of sporting firearms. The program is voluntary, and is oversubscribed. It is extremely popular. Ms Muller says “If popularity is the only criterion for offering a course, then Pine Bush should consider a credit course in pornography or getting high”. I will not respond to that statement, it is too preposterous, and I hope that the reader agrees with me that Ms Muller has gone way overboard here!
Outdoor sports and a conservation ethic will benefit a young man or woman for the rest of his or her life. Unlike football or soccer - which a person is unable to enjoy as a participant as he or she gets older - hunting and fishing are lifetime activities. Some people enjoy walking outdoors and merely observing. Others prefer to participate on a more fundamental level - harvesting fish and game or foraging wild plants and mushrooms. There is nothing wrong with either approach, as long as laws are obeyed and respect is shown.

Strange visitor to my web site
The second week in Jan. I noticed a visitor to my web page from  http://condenast.com/ .  It seemed a strange name but I checked it out and did not think anything of it but the name did stick in my mind for some reason.  Today, 1/16/00, I happened to visit the DRUDGE REPORT and found the article: MTV SNUBS BUSH; NO INAUGURAL PARTY PLANNED AFTER CLINTON BLOWOUTS.  The report included this line: "In '97, First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton was honored at the MTV/CONDE NAST "Pre-Inaugural Cocktail Party" at the Corcoran Gallery of Art. Rep. Barney Frank and actor Kevin Spacey
partied together at the Corcoran, along with Sumner Redstone."  (I also found an additional article in the NY POST: 'ZINE QUEENS AT WAR)  I wonder if one of the Mags that Conde Nast owns is going to do a hit article or if someone who works for them is looking for a license.
    1/24/01 The Village Voice Visit
I wonder why the  http://villagevoice.com/  paid a visit to the NYSPRA and my web page?  I wonder what is in the works?

Judge Carol Klein takes oath of office
Congratulations to Family Court Judge Carol Klein.  She will be in office for the next ten years issuing pistol licenses.  Based on her record and on her promises in her run for office, we can expect someone who will deal with handgun owners in a fair and unbiased manner.  We wish her the best in her new position.

SCOPE initiates lawsuit against Pataki and the State of New York
The SCOPE Board of Directors based on the findings of the committee has retained legal counsel and is now in the early stages of filing suit. Not surprising to anyone, litigating a case like this will be quite costly, adding insult to injury we will be arguing against state attorneys paid for by your tax dollars. In other words your tax dollars will be used to convince a court that your Second Amendment rights should be severely restricted.
Make no mistake about it, this will be a costly but necessary venture. The Board of Directors of SCOPE fully appreciates the magnitude of the task we are undertaking. SCOPE has prided itself as being fiscally prudent, keeping our membership dues low, and limiting the number of times we approach our members for additional funds.
This is one of those times when we must appeal for your help. Whether as an individual, a club or your company we need your financial support to pursue this lawsuit. We are asking you for the most generous contribution you can make. The full weight of state government is what we are up against, we can fight it with your help but we must have your help!
Please be as generous as you can. Make your checks payable to:

New anti-gun bills in Assembly and Senate
New anti-gun laws covering the wish list of HCI and other "BAN ALL GUNS" crowd are popping up like empty crack vials in a crack house.  Among the great ideas are arresting you if you have a bullet in your pocket when you go to a "BUILDINGS USED  FOR  EDUCATIONAL  PURPOSES" including a school bus with the punishment also including being "PERMANENTLY BARRED FROM THE LEGAL POSSESSION OF ANY FIREARM, DANGEROUS WEAPON, DISGUISED GUN, EXPLOSIVE OR  ANY COMPONENT THEREOF," S711.  Other bills would make it a crime to have a laser pointing device on a gun, (S00422); ban all gun shows at any public owned public property; ban having any type of gun within 1,000 feet of any school, municipal playgrounds and other places, (A01132); and the session is young.

New regulations for the Gun DNA programs
FFLs got a copy of the regulation around the end of  December 2000 and I got a copy on 1/9/01.  One of the test stations will be in Middletown.  It is too long to post on my web page and most of it has to do with stuff that everyone knows.  The new program is called, COMBINED BALLISTIC IDENTIFICATION SYSTEM(CoBIS).  They have posted the FAQ's and the rule on their web page.  (Look at the bottom of the page for rule18.)  On the web page they list a "Portable Facility" but we will have to wait for further information about its operation.  Similar types of laws have impacted gun sales in Maryland and other new rules in California and Mass. have almost stopped handgun sales in those states.

National Womens Charity Shotgun Shooting Event to be Held in Dutchess County
The National Rifle Association's Women on Target shooting program has scheduled 14 recreational charity shoots for this year. One of the events will be held in Dover Plains, NY.
"Women on Target is pleased and excited to sponsor another year of recreational charity shoots," says Stephanie Henson, manager of the NRA's Women's Programs Department. "These events fulfill our two-fold purpose of giving women a safe,  enjoyable shooting experience and raising money for a variety of good causes."

Anti-gun AOL merges with Time Warner, What impact will it have?
What impact will the AOL Time Warner merger have on the freedom of the press and the press being on the side of the anti-gunners?  For those of you who do not know, anyone who had a gun related web site on their AOL account got a nasty e-mail from AOL.  The e-mail in summary would say that your site had porno on it and had been removed from the AOL server and if you put your site back up AOL would cut you off.  Can we expect more anti-gun stories on the TV and in the publications that they own?

Pro-gun group sets up web site that upsets HCI.
The pro-gun rights organization, called the Center For the Prevention of Handgun Violence, has an Internet URL of http://www.cphv.com. The group also owns the domain names handguncontrol.net and cphv.net -- identical names to those of the gun-control sites, except those have .org suffixes.  HCI and CPHV are so upset that they are going to court to block the pro-gun groups from using the same letters in their web address.

    Mass. Killer had Mass. license
With laws so strict that Brown Bess Muskets that were used in the American Revolution that are on display in a glass case in the state capital building have to have custom trigger locks, the state still can not figure out who is not allowed to own a firearm due to mental illness.  From the article:
Michael McDermott, who was charged with the Dec. 26 killings at an Internet consulting company in suburban Wakefield, was able to obtain and keep a state firearms identification card and legally buy at least three of his four guns at stores in Massachusetts despite having been hospitalized at least three times for severe depression, law enforcement officials and his parents say.

Dade County Fla. Vote count goes to BUSH!
Boy this is a lot different that what we have been lead to believe.  Now it does not really matter and if it is not official who cares but this is the opening of the article:
MIAMI -- George W. Bush would have gained six votes more than Al Gore if all the dimples and hanging chads on 10,600 previously uncounted ballots in Miami-Dade County had been included in the totals, according to a review by The Palm Beach Post.

Senate power to be split 50/50
Because of the 50/50 split in the Senate you can expect every anti-gun bill to make it to the Senate floor.  Expect many of them to pass and all of them that pass will be followed by speeches from the anti-gunners containing phrases like, "The passage of this bill is a good first step ... , but we need to do more for the children ..."
Schumer is already set to introduce new anti-gun laws.  "For the Children ..."
