Powers
is out and Tredwell is in as head of NYS Republican party.
While it will not be offical until the first week of
March, it looks like the new head of the R party is Sandy
Tredwell. He is "a (Mario) Pataki guy." We will have
to see what changes this brings. Alexander F. (Sandy) Treadwell was appointed
New York State Secretary of State by Governor George (Mario) E. Pataki
on January 4, 1995.
Gun
makers fight back in court against NY's AG Spitzers lawsuit.
The State Attorney General's Office brought the suit,
People of the State of New York v. Sturm, Ruger & Co., 402586/00, against
eight major gun makers and more than a dozen wholesalers operating in New
York State last June after months of negotiations with the industry broke
down. Only one manufacturer, Smith & Wesson, agreed to accept curbs.
The lawsuit asks for an injunction forcing the industry
to takes measures to "abate" a public nuisance that it "created,
maintained or contributed to." by the way it currently markets and sells
its guns. The state wants the gun makers to track gun dealers who
sell guns that end up being used in crimes and make the gun makers require
that dealers take measures such as limiting the number of guns a customer
can buy in any given time and make other changes.
NY State cited the case of a tavern in Rochester,
N.Y., that was held responsible for the rowdy acts of its patrons even
though it was in full compliance with the licensing requirement of the
State Liquor Authority, local ordinances and had hired a bouncer. The gun
makers lawyer said that would have more force if the defendant in the Rochester
case had been Budweiser rather than a tavern owner.

Ashcroft wins vote
and is the new AG
While Ashcroft did win, the vote was meant to tell Pres. Bush that he should
never send anyone to the Senate that is conservative if he expects them
to get approval for the Supreme Court. What a way to rig the SC!
Try to make sure that you only have appointed Judges that do not think
that the Second Amendment means anything. The following was taken
from an NRA Alert.
All 50 Republican Senators deserve our
thanks for voting to confirm Ashcroft, but eight Democrats also deserve
a special thanks for rising above the partisan atmosphere that Democrats
like Schumer seem committed to preserving. Democrats voting to confirm
Ashcroft were: John Breaux (La.); Robert Byrd (W.Va.); Kent Conrad (N.D.);
Christopher Dodd (Conn.); Byron Dorgan (N.D.); Russ Feingold (Wisc.); Zell
Miller (Ga.); and Ben Nelson (Neb.). If you would like to thank these or
any of the 50 Republican Senators for confirming an immensely qualified
candidate for Attorney General, rather than questioning his personal religious
and ideological beliefs, you can find contact information by using the
"Write Your Reps" (http://congress.nw.dc.us/nra/index.pl) tool at NRAILA.org
(http://www.nraila.org), or by calling the Grassroots Division at (800)
392-8683. Also be sure to let those who voted against Ashcroft know how
disappointed you are that they caved in to the pressure of the anti-gun
extremists. Remind them that you will remember their vote the next time
you go to the polls.
A refrigerator
in the Capitol was "wounded" over the weekend in a bizarre incident involving
a Capitol Police officer.
Several officers were preparing for their 3 p.m. roll
call on Sunday when the cops were suddenly sent scurrying by a gunshot
that rang out in the break room on the terrace level of the Capitol.
One source told HOH that a cop "toying with his Glock" had pumped a bullet
into the break room's refrigerator. The unnamed officer has been
suspended with pay and the officer's police privileges have also been "revoked,"
pending an investigation by the force's internal affairs division.
(I guess the T H-R needs to write an editorial that the Capitol Police
should have their guns locked up.)

Rep. Jerrold Nadler
(D-N.Y.) wins award for the quickest Member to shamelessly exploit shooting
outside the White House.
February 8, 2001, from ROLL CALL's Heard on the Hill by Ed Henry
Shot in the Dark. Rep. Jerrold Nadler (D-N.Y.) wins HOH's
award for the quickest Member to shamelessly exploit yesterday's shooting
outside the White House.
At precisely 12:49 p.m., barely an hour after the incident,
Nadler fired off an e-mail press release demanding hearings on "handgun
licensing and registration."
After expressing relief that President Bush wasn't harmed,
Nadler took a cheap shot (sorry) at the Republican president, anyway.
"The President, of course, has the advantage of living
in a veritable fortress, out of harm's way, and out of the range of this
handgun," Nadler noted. "But most Americans are not so lucky. They do not
have the protection the President enjoys. And, in fact, 52 percent of those
Americans murdered in 1998 were done so by handguns, just like the one
used today."
Even though the release was sent out when few facts about
the case were in, Nadler spokesman Eric Schmeltzer defended the release
by saying that none of the bystanders were hurt - so it wasn't really a
major exploitation.
"We watched to make sure that no civilians or bystanders
were shot, because to do it that quickly would be exploiting a tragedy,"
Schmeltzer stressed. "You leave a little bit of time" in a situation like
that.
Schmeltzer added that Nadler wants to make sure gun control
is on the Congressional agenda. "You need to jump on it quickly to make
sure the political point is made in the stories."

McCain
Planning Gun Control Bill
2/8/01
Sens. John McCain (R-Ariz.) and Joe Lieberman (D-Conn.) are quietly working
together to draft an alternative compromise that both parties can support.
The bill is likely to include a reworked version of the controversial gun
show loophole, trigger locks and more funds and support for the law enforcement
community, aides to both Senators said.

Ashcroft
to enforce federal gun laws
By DAVID GOLDSTEIN and SCOTT CANON - The Kansas City Star,
Date: 02/06/01 22:15
John Ashcroft plans to intensify the enforcement
of federal gun laws as a way to reduce crime and get guns off the streets.
Ashcroft, who has long opposed attempts to legislate
gun control, hopes to pattern his new effort after a widely praised program
in Richmond, Va., that has been credited with reducing that city's violence
and proliferation of illegal guns.
Known as "Project Exile," the program requires the
local U.S. attorney's office to prosecute all gun violations that meet
the minimum level needed for federal involvement.
"That is an idea that we are aggressively going
to push," said David Israelite, Ashcroft's deputy chief of staff. "It is
a national program of providing the resources and guidance necessary to
really crack down on gun crimes. I think it will be one of the top priorities
of his administration."
